Vodafone Begins Pushing Out Froyo To HTC Desire

Posted by Alex Smith

Last week Vodafone announced that they’ll begin pushing out Froyo to the HTC Desire beginning August 23rd and that the roll out will take approximately two weeks to cover everyone. Just as promised, the 2.2 OTA has officially began rolling out. Their initial announcement of the Android 2.2 came when many upset Desire owners received an update full of Vodafone’s 360 bloatware. Vodafone responded saying that with the Android 2.2 update, the Vodafone 360 bloatware will be removed. This is coming as great news for some of you Desire owners who have been waiting for the bloatware removal.

Watch Out For Updates As Vodafone Might Void Your Warranty

Posted by Alex Smith

Vodafone wishes to be your only official update source and if you choose otherwise, you’ll void your warranty. In the Vodafone support forums, Vodafone has stated:

Firstly to see our Firmware statement click here, we cannot elaborate on this anymore. The eForum staff have nothing to do with developing/testing/releasing the firmware, this is handled by none customer facing teams.

Regarding Warranty, you will have a warranty with Samsung separate from your Vodafone warranty. Our warranty allows you to get faulty handsets repaired through us even if you don’t have insurance on the condition that your phone is running Vodafone approved software and it is within your contracted period.

Apologies if this is not the answer you wanted however we are not involved in the firmware process at all, nor can we release any information that has not been officially released by Vodafone.

If you accept an update from Samsung directly and Vodafone has not approved it, your warranty is now void. This current issue was sparked from Galaxy S users in Vodafone’s forums who are discussing recently released official Samsung Galaxy S firmware via KIES. If you upgrade your firmware through Samsung, you will still have your manufacturer’s warranty, just not the warranty Vodafone provide. Want in on the discussion? Check out Vodafone’s forum.

Vodafone’s HTC Desire To Enjoy Froyo Monday

Posted by Alex Smith

It’s official! Vodafone is sending out the Android 2.2 to their HTC Desire users starting Monday, August 23rd. Vodafone had just sent out an OTA update that did nothing but piss off everyone because it only contained Vodafone bloatware. Users were quickly to respond to Vodafone’s actions and Vodafone promised them a more fulfilling OTA update. According to Vodafone’s support forums, the reason behind the wait for Android 2.2 was:

Our priority has been to make sure that the software does what we said it will do. This meant testing took a little longer than anticipated.

The Android 2.2 will be staggered over the next two weeks, so don’t fret if your desire doesn’t prompt you for an update on Monday. Vodafone was even kind enough to provide instructions for those who would like to remove the bloatware upon receiving the Android 2.2 update. You can find them below, Enjoy!

Finding out which software your HTC Desire is running

To check the current software version of your HTC Desire, go to Settings->About phone->Software information and look for the entries “Android version” and “Software number”.

Your software should either be 1.19.161.5 if you haven’t downloaded the recent Vodafone 360 software, or 1.24.161.3 if you have accepted the update.

Instructions for users who have not downloaded the Vodafone 360 update (1.19.161.5)

Follow the instructions on the device once you are prompted that an update is available for your phone.

Any applications you have downloaded from the Android Marketplace will be retained, including 360 People and Vodafone Music if you’ve chosen to download them to your handset. In addition, if you have modified the browser homepage, bookmarks or home screen layout, this will remain unchanged by the update.

Instructions for users who downloaded and now want to remove the Vodafone 360 update (1.24.161.3)

If you have downloaded the Vodafone 360 update and want to remove it from your device, you will need to follow one of these two approaches, depending on whether or not you have accessed and updated the “360 Updates” or “Shop” apps pre-installed in the 1.24.161.3 update.

If you downloaded the Vodafone 360 software but chose not to update these applications – which you would have been prompted to do on opening them for the first time – installing Android 2.2 will remove the Vodafone branding and apps from your device.

Please note:

- The icons for “Shop”, ”Music Shop” and “MyWeb” will still appear on your device’s home screen, but will no longer work. To permanently delete them, you will need to drag the icons into the bin.
- Your browser homepage, bookmarks and home screen layout won’t be changed by the update. This is to ensure that any changes you’ve made since the Vodafone 360 software download are not removed by the FOTA update. You can manually change these settings on the device.
- Although it won’t be necessary following the Android 2.2 update, a factory reset of the device would also remove the Vodafone customisation, but you should ensure your device is backed up to avoid losing your content through this process.

Customers who have accessed and updated the 360 apps since downloading the initial Vodafone 360 software can also follow these guidelines for removing the content from their phone. However, in order to remove the “360 updates” and “Shop” applications you will need to do the following:

1. Go to “Settings->Applications->Manage applications->360 updates” and tap on “uninstall updates”.
2. When asked “Do you want to uninstall the updates to this Android application?” Select “OK” and then “OK” again.
3. The phone will show the message “Uninstall not successful”. This message is incorrect and in fact the application is fully removed. Select “OK”.
4. Go to “Settings->Applications->Manage applications->Shop” and tap on “uninstall updates”.
5. The user will be presented with the message “Do you want to uninstall the updates to this Android application?” Select “OK” and then “OK” again.
6. The phone will show the message “Uninstall not successful”. This message is incorrect and in fact the application is fully removed. Select “OK”.
7. Restart the phone and the two applications are permanently removed.

Vodafone Getting Ready to Embrace the Samsung Galaxy Tab

Posted by Alex Smith

While many of us have been dying to hear anything new surrounding the Samsung Galaxy Tab, Vodafone knows something that we don’t and looks to be preparing themselves for the tablet. The Galaxy Tab is definitely going to land on Vodafone and will also be available in contract or no-contract versions. Samsung has yet to announce this tablet, but we’re guessing late September or early October. Vodafone is currently the only carrier we know about that is expecting this tablet, there could be many more carriers waiting just like we are.

Vodafone’s HTC Desire to Receive Froyo Very Soon

Posted by Alex Smith

It looks like Vodafone will be delivering Froyo to their HTC Desire within 7 to 10 days. Vodafone recently pushed their Vodafone 360 update which filled the devices with 360-branded apps that many are unsatisfied with. The good news is that with the Android 2.2 update, those unwanted 360 apps will be eliminated. Vodafone is shooting for their announced time frame, that is if they can get the final testing done in time. Below is Vodafone’s official statement regarding their recent Vodafone 360 update.

“We’ve listened to feedback from customers on a number of points around the recent 360 Android 2.1 update and made some changes to the roll out plan.
The Android 2.2 update for Vodafone HTC Desire users will be based on the HTC open market version of the software and we will customise it to ensure our network settings are installed.
For customers who have downloaded the recent 360 update for Android 2.1, we can confirm that the Android 2.2 update will remove the 360 applications and will leave the homepage and bookmarks on your current settings.
Customers who want to access the 360 services will be able to do so once the Android 2.2 compatible version is available and, in the meantime, can now download apps like 360 People from the Android Marketplace.
We plan to make the 360 apps available in a separate update for the HTC Desire at a later date, giving customers the choice to download it. We will let you know when the date for delivery of the Android 2.2 update is finalised, but, subject to testing, we expect this to be in 7-10 days time.”

Vodafone Is Dealing with Some Upset Nexus One Users

Posted by Alex Smith

Vodafone is having problems keeping their Nexus One users happy which is causing an uproar. One problem is stemming from the other which is causing unsteadiness in the Vodafone Forums. The first issue, Nexus One users are asking why they have not yet received their Android 2.2 update? Which bring us to the next issue, why is Vodafone messing with the update?

Vodafone claims that they are modifying the Voice mail and MMS features, ensuring they’re working properly. Apparently, this whole situation is Vodafone’s own fault as they have previously stated in writing and in voice, that they will not be messing with firmware updates. Users are concerned that Vodafone might be removing some features that could possibly affect the carrier. So, if tethering is not included when users finally receive the OTA update, we could have a serious problem.
