Adobe Moves On…

Posted by Kevin Stagg

It was the strangest thing. I went to the Adobe MAX convention in 2008 in San Francisco, an event which draws thousands of web developers/programmers from across the globe to discuss Adobe software. I tried to find a person with a Windows laptop and it was a real task. It was basically the technological equivalent of “Where’s Waldo” and the exact opposite of what you find in the rest of society where approximately 93% or so have Windows machines.

Apple computers are entrenched in the developer’s market. At least, this is what I have seen in my travels. I myself use Windows XP at the office (boring) and have Windows 7 (awesome)  at home.  All I really care about is that Adobe Fireworks or Flash Professional opens up when I want them to, or any other programs from the CS5 Suite.

Earlier this year Apple didn’t “play nice” and decided to announce a mere days before the launch of the CS5 Suite by Adobe that they were not going to allow any applications to be built using Adobe Flash to be loaded onto the iPhone4. This, despite the fact that they knew for months about plans by Adobe that Flash CS5 was going to be able to export applications in such a way that it would meet Apple’s existing publishing standards. Millions of Flash developers were thus left homeless.  OK, that last bit is a stretch, but I’m willing to bet that they were a tad pissed.

An embarrassing marketing campaign by Adobe ensued with “We Love Apple” banners posted by Adobe scattered across the web. It kinda reminded me of when John Cusack holds up his stereo up over his head in the movie, Say Anything. I felt like saying to Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen, “Dude. Let it go, man. It just isn’t meant to be.”

Well finally Mr. Narayen has come forward and said:

Apple made some statements about the suitability of our technology for mobile devices.  I think we’ve proven that the technology is not only suitable but it actually significantly enhances the value on these mobile devices.

They’ve chosen to keep their system closed and we’d rather work with partners who are interested in working with us.  We believe in open systems. We believe in the power of the internet and in customers making choices and I think a lot of the controversy was about their decision at that point. They’ve made their choice. We’ve made ours and we’ve moved on.

Apparently Adobe has made agreements with 19 of the 20 top mobile companies out there;  Apple being the lone dissenter because, you know – they’re trendsetters,  so they can afford to walk away from Adobe right now. There are also plans to launch to Blackberry later this year and Windows Phone 7 probably in 2011.

Although they haven’t come out and said it, it’s obvious that Apple doesn’t want Flash on their iPhone4 because of the fact that if you use Flash, you can basically develop once and thus export for multiple platforms. This would then eliminate any aura of exclusivity that Apple has with many of its applications within their market. Also, it would cut into the money they make from the applications as well. On a related note, Phillip Shoemaker, Apple’s App Store Director, apparently sells his own fart apps on Apple’s App Market under the company name, Gray Noodle. You can read more on this story here at Wired. It’s true – I can’t make stuff like that up.

On a more serious note. Adobe has also announced that Adobe AIR will be released in Q4 2010. This is the application which basically turns your standard Flash file into a stand-alone application. The App Market for Android is going to explode even more so in terms of the number of quality apps.

Yep – things are looking bright for Adobe and Flash.

Cross-Platform Battle Royale

Posted by Justin Palos

Now that Android is finally getting the attention it deserves from devs of games and apps, many users are finding that it is now possible to compete, share files, and play games with users across both leading platforms, iOS and Android.

There are a few games that have enabled players to compete with users from ‘the other OS’ for a while now, but it seems that this ability is finally getting known and put to use. Games such as Raging Thunder 2 and Homerun Battle 3-D have been doing this for a while, and the latest addition to the gaming environment is Skies of Glory.

Skies of Glory, by Social Gaming Network, enables players to compete with users over WiFi, 3G, or bluetooth connections; not a bad way to open up the compatibility realm. So now the battle for the best OS not only exists in the real world, but the gaming one as well.

Also adding to the list of compatibility is the app Bump. Apple featured this app in an ad that they did for the iPhone 3GS, and now the Android Market has been graced with this app as well. Users of the app can also share files via Android-Android, Android-iOS (or vice versa). Pretty nifty, especially since iOS uses a pretty basic file feature set, unless jailbroken of course.

Google Uses Kill Switch To Uninstall Android Apps

Posted by android spin

Google has recently announced their Remote Application Removal Feature and yes, they have used it before. This feature acts as like a remote kill switch, that uses an OTA function to remove applications. A research team had developed two applications that “intentionally misrepresented their purpose in order to encourage user downloads,” stated by Android Security Lead, Rich Cannings. Don’t worry those applications were not malicious nor did not have access to private data.

This article was released soon after an article was published claiming the amount of security threats on Android and suggesting approximately 20% of the Android Market could be infected. The good news is that as soon as Google finds a malicious app, it can be terminated.

“This remote removal functionality — along with Android’s unique Application Sandbox and Permissions model, Over-The-Air update system, centralized Market, developer registrations, user-submitted ratings, and application flagging — provides a powerful security advantage to help protect Android users in our open environment.”- Rich Cunnings.

Why I am Personally Looking Forward to Froyo

Posted by android spin

So I’ve finally got my phone back from T-Mobile. It has been repaired perfectly. However, after rooting, flashing CM5, and running my usual Titanium Backup restore, when I went to download any updates for my apps, this is what I was presented with.

Yes. I had almost three full ‘pages’, as it were, of available updates (on a G1 screen). And I now have to update each one of them manually. This may take a long time, and as much as I hate to admit it, the fact that an ‘Update All’ button, which the iPhone has had since the App Store was first launched, is only coming to Android in 2.2 (almost 2 years after the first Android device was first released) really doesn’t reflect well on Google. But the fact that Froyo will have such a button is at least something…I guess. Sorry Google, but until Froyo is released, this is an area where Apple has the 1-up.

XDA App now available for Android

Posted by android spin

Yesterday, XDA announced their very own app for Android! XDA, as some of you may not know, is a forum that hosts threads on primarily  HTC devices for developers, themers, and general users.

If there is ever a time something can’t be found on AndroidSpin, XDA would definitely be the next place to look.

The app is set up very similar to how the website works, such as:

  • Threads divided by what device you are looking for
  • There is a Latest tab, to display all of the most newly updated tabs on the site
  • Forum tab to view all of the forums.

You can also set up your own favorite threads to come back to and view later, check your PM’s, and you can view your Profile.

Of course, the app is free, and can be found on the Android Market after searching “XDA”.

Below you will find a video review of the app.

Have you used this app yet? What are your thoughts? Let us know.

HTC Hero Android Market Missing Apps?

Posted by admin

I just got the HTC Hero for Sprint and I was browsing the Android Market and noticed a lot of apps I had on my previous android phone (I had a Google myTouch for TMobile for a bit) aren't showing up in the marketplace.

The program specifically I was looking for was MobileDefense but there were a bunch that I couldn't find.

Anyone know why the apps aren't showing up? I already updated the phone to the latest firmware and I don't know what else I could try.

Thanks.
