Verizon’s New Pre-Paid Data Plans Include Droid Series Devices

Posted by Alex Smith

Verizon has officially announced pre-paid data plans for 3G devices which include the Droid series devices. You can grab an unlimited data plan, which is contract-free, for just $30/mo. and for feature phones just $10/mo. for 25MB data.

These new data offerings will help our prepaid customers experience the full breadth of Verizon Wireless’ robust device portfolio and the many engaging, informative and helpful applications that depend on a data plan,” said Jim Sullivan, director of marketing for Verizon Wireless.  ”Our prepaid customers will now have the freedom to enjoy all of the capabilities that these phones have to offer, while controlling costs and without being tied to a contract.

All Android devices are eligible for their pre-paid plans which include:

  • Motorola Droid 2
  • Motorola Droid X
  • HTC Droid Incredible
  • HTC Droid Eris
  • Motorola Droid
  • Motorola Devour
  • LG Ally

As we are awaiting the arrival of the Samsung Fascinate, we would assume this device would make the list as well, considering the recently launched Droid 2. The current pre-paid plans are available today at Verizon locations, but will become available online on September 28th. Verizon will not be subsidizing the devices as they do not come with a new contract, but the no contract unlimited data for $30/mo. is still a pretty sweet deal.

Head to your local Verizon store today and take advantage of this new offer. Full press release located HERE.

Motorola’s Software Upgrade List Gets an Update

Posted by Alex Smith

Motorola has updated their Android software list and it looks like there are some who might be a little upset. One of the advantages of purchasing a high-end device is that the device will always see the next firmware upgrade. High-end devices run much better specs than the entry-level devices and the manufacturer and carrier simply don’t want to waste their time showing some update love to these devices, which we’ve seen Samsung and T-Mobile do to the Samsung Behold II. Below is the updated list of devices that will be seeing Android 2.1 or Android 2.2.

  • Motorola BackFlip
    • Upgrade to Android 2.1 planned for Q3
  • Motorola CLIQ
    • Upgrade to Android 2.1 – testing in process, planned for late Q3/early Q4
  • Motorola CLIQ XT
    • Upgrade to Android 2.1 – testing in process, planned for late Q3/early Q4
  • Motorola Devour
    • Will not have a software upgrade to Android 2.1
  • Motorola Droid
    • Upgrade to Android 2.2 currently rolling out in phases
  • Motorola Droid X
    • Upgrade to Android 2.2 planned for late summer.

For those of you who currently have the Motorola Devour, I regret to inform you that you will not be seeing Android 2.1 Éclair, I recommend that you upgrade your device to the Motorola Droid 2 or Motorola Droid X if you would like the very latest in firmware upgrades. BackFlip and CLIQ/XT owners, the upgrade is coming you’ll just have to wait a little longer than expected.

Easy Root Gets Uprooted from Android Market

Posted by Salim Ibrahim

Easy Root, the 1-click root app for the DROID and DROID X, has been removed from the market.

Shortly after the developers behind this app figured out a way to root the official stock Froyo(FRG01B) with the 1-click process, it was pulled from the Android market. Though no explanation has been given, it is suspected that it may have exploited vulnerability in the Android 2.2 platform.

Searching for the Easy Root on the market brings “Easy Root Compatibility Test” app by the same developer, Unstable Apps.

The developer states on the description of the new app:

the app has been yanked by Google with not a lot of reason or explanation. Keep your eye here, though, and we’ll keep you updated.”

Could this be the last we see of Easy Root? Count yourself lucky if you were able to get your hands on this app early.

1-Click Rooting App for Droid and Droid X Hits Android Market

Posted by Salim Ibrahim

In late July, we reported on how to root and unroot Your Motorla Droid X with one click using Windows. Yesterday, developer Unstable Apps released a version of the application to make it easier to root your Droid directly from your device instead of using a Windows application.

Easy Root lets you root your phone with the click of a single button. Run all the great apps that require root without having to go through the difficult process normally associated with rooting your phone!

It currently works only for Android 2.1 and has been tested on the Motorola Droid and Droid X. There have been unconfirmed reports of the app working on the Droid Incredible too.

Easy Root is available for $0.99 from the Android Market. Though it does not have an unroot option, this might be an alternative for those who don’t use Windows. So far there have been over 500 downloads since it was released about a day ago. Scan or click the QRCode below to check it out for yourself.

Motorola DROID Gets Froyo Love Early Next Week!

Posted by Salim Ibrahim

A Motorola Employee announced via the company’s support forum that Verizon Wireless will start pushing Android 2.2 (Froyo) to the original Droid by Motorola during the week of August 2.

The report also claimed that Froyo could have been pushed to a small select few as a pre-launch test as early as July 30.

There has been no official word yet but Verizon’s website now has an updated Mandatory Upgrade page for the FRG01B update in the System Update section of their website.

Through forums, the closest lead I found was a timeline on Motorola’s support site detailing plans for upcoming Android Software upgrades. The timeline indicates that an upgrade to Android 2.2 is expected to begin the week of August 2 for the Droid. From the looks of the chart, the Droid X doesn’t have a targeted date yet.

MyVerizon Android App Gets Updated

Posted by Stormy Beach

If you happen to have Verizon then I’m sure a lot of you will find this app useful if you’re not already using it. The update to MyVerizon lets you keep track of your data usage, text message usage and your minutes. It also received a UI makeover that makes it look a lot more polished.  The nicest included feature is an on screen widget. So if you haven’t updated yet, you’d better go check it out. Now if T-Mobile will get on the band wagon I’ll be happy. I just want a widget!

Is The Motorola Droid 2 Gearing Up For An August 12th Launch?

Posted by Alex Smith

Following in the wake of the Motorola Droid X, rumors are spreading like fire about the Motorola Droid 2. Engadget is reporting that from their source, the Droid 2 will see a soft launch on August 12th and the marketing for the device will start full force on August 23rd. While a lot of you dropped your original Droid for the highly anticipated Droid X, there is still a lot of you that just could not let go of the hardware keyboard that will be available on the Motorola Droid 2. To make their rumor more interesting is that in honor of the Droid name, their will be devices available with R2-D2 on the back and if you do not know who R2-D2 is then ask your parents.

What do you all think about the R2-D2 image on the device? Let us know below.

Blurry Cam Strikes Again with Motorola Droid Slider Heading to Verizon?

Posted by Alex Smith

This Pre-like device by Motorola shows a vertical sliding QWERTY keyboard. Compared to the previous Motorola Droid series device, this does not look like it is real, but we will never know until this device gets confirmed. It seems like a step in the wrong direction if you ask me. These blurry cam images do show Motorola branding and the capacitive keys found on a Motorola Droid device, so this might actually be a legit device.

I’m sure if you listen close, you can hear hearts breaking from the many Droid fans around the world.
