Samsung Galaxy S: Europe vs. USA

I’ve been using a Euro-spec Samsung Galaxy S as my phone for just over three weeks now, and first impressions are good. Since a full review of the Samsung Vibrant has already been done on this site, I see no point in doing a full review of the Euro Galaxy S. They are almost exactly the same phone, and so it would be pointless to review a device twice. However, I wanted to do a quick overview of how the European Galaxy S differs from its American siblings.
1. Name and Carrier Branding
T-Mobile has the Vibrant. AT&T has the Captivate. Verizon has the Fascinate. Sprint has the Epic 4G. And, as I have covered before, there is only one model of Galaxy S phone sold in Europe. Its model number is i9000, and no matter which carrier you look at, no matter which country you are in, it will always be known quite simply as the Samsung Galaxy S. In addition, at least in my case, there is no carrier branding on the phone, or for that matter, on the packaging. I have the T-Mobile UK version of the phone, yet in stark contrast to any Vibrant, there are no T-Mobile logos to be found anywhere. I’m not even entirely sure that the phone is carrier locked. Phones sold on other carriers may be different, but in my case, my phone just looks like an unlocked Galaxy S.
2. Look and Feel
The look and feel of the European Galaxy S can be most closely compared to the Vibrant. In fact, the only real difference between the Euro Galaxy S and the Vibrant is the set of Android control keys. The Vibrant, or for that matter, any American Galaxy S phone, has 4 capacitive touch buttons below the screen. The Euro SGS has three buttons. Two are capacitive touch (the menu button, which can be held down to act as a search button, and the back button), while the home key is a physical button slap bang between the two touch buttons. Personally, I prefer having this physical button. Apart from that, and some minor differences on the back panel, it looks and feels like a Vibrant, which is to say, not exactly like a flagship phone. If you want to own a Euro SGS, welcome to the world of a cheap plastic back panel. I seriously recommend getting some sort of a case for it.
3. Software
Just like the USA phones, the Euro SGS runs TouchWiz 3.0 on Android 2.1. However, the lack of carrier branding that I have previously mentioned extends to the software side of things as well. Unlike the Epic, the Captivate, and the Vibrant, the Euro SGS effectively runs a “stock” version of the TouchWiz software. As far as I am aware, regardless of which carrier you get the Euro SGS on, the software will always look the same. In my case, on T-Mobile UK, the only pre-installed applications are the ones that Samsung installs by default, such as Layar and Aldiko. There is no “Web n’ Walk” application like there was pre-installed on my G1. This is a good thing, because many people will not use their carrier applications.
4. The Problems
You remember that GPS glitch? And the menu lag? They’re all to be found in the Euro SGS. But honestly, neither of them bother me too much, and using the latest leaked firmware (JM1) seems to fix both of them at least partially.
5. The Conclusion
The i9000 is, at its core, just like any other Galaxy S phone. Sure it doesn’t have “Avatar” preloaded like the Vibrant, and it doesn’t have the physical keyboard of the Epic 4G, but I don’t care, because it’s still my perfect device.
Google Being Sued Over Issues with Nexus One

It’s a beautiful rainy day here in Chicago and another rainy day for Google. Google is being taken to court in a class action lawsuit involving owners of the Nexus One, who are claiming that they were lured into buying the device based on features such as 3G which they were unable to maintain. Nathan Nabors of Florida is the front man in this charge being brought against Google, and he feels like they didn’t provide sufficient support during the time they were selling the device. The lawsuit stretches from Florida to California, covering anyone who purchased an N1 through Google, and at this time HTC (the manufacturer), and T-Mobile (the network), are not listed as being involved in the case. Google has been reached by TechCrunch, who first relayed the story, but at this time no further information is available. We will keep you up to date as details unfold.

Verizon’s New Pre-Paid Data Plans Include Droid Series Devices

Verizon has officially announced pre-paid data plans for 3G devices which include the Droid series devices. You can grab an unlimited data plan, which is contract-free, for just $30/mo. and for feature phones just $10/mo. for 25MB data.
These new data offerings will help our prepaid customers experience the full breadth of Verizon Wireless’ robust device portfolio and the many engaging, informative and helpful applications that depend on a data plan,” said Jim Sullivan, director of marketing for Verizon Wireless. ”Our prepaid customers will now have the freedom to enjoy all of the capabilities that these phones have to offer, while controlling costs and without being tied to a contract.
All Android devices are eligible for their pre-paid plans which include:
- Motorola Droid 2
- Motorola Droid X
- HTC Droid Incredible
- HTC Droid Eris
- Motorola Droid
- Motorola Devour
- LG Ally
As we are awaiting the arrival of the Samsung Fascinate, we would assume this device would make the list as well, considering the recently launched Droid 2. The current pre-paid plans are available today at Verizon locations, but will become available online on September 28th. Verizon will not be subsidizing the devices as they do not come with a new contract, but the no contract unlimited data for $30/mo. is still a pretty sweet deal.
Head to your local Verizon store today and take advantage of this new offer. Full press release located HERE.

LG’s Android-Powered Optimus Pad Shows Itself

This is our first look at the LG tablet that is set to be attending the IFA event in Berlin, which kicks off on September 3rd. We already knew that LG has been working on a tablet and this image comes from a slide shown during LG’s pre-IFA Dealer Day event. This tablet, the LG Optimus Pad, features the Android OS and along with the image, LG has provided a little teaser description:
LG introduces the Optimus Pad on Android platform with superior performance, thinner and lighter than competitors’ tablets and many “firsts”.
More information to come.
We must patiently await the arrival of the many tablets that are to be unveiled soon at IFA 2010.

New T-Mobile G2 Images Emerge
The T-Mobile G2 is coming and as the successor to the G1 and being T-Mobile’s first HSPA+ device, this will be a huge launch for T-Mobile. Looking in the G2 system dump and seeing these images, this is obviously not HTC’s Sense UI. The G2 features a “Z” hinge which easily reminds us of the G1 and although the keyboard does not look the same, it still looks sexy. The G2 is rumored to be launched on the 29th, but like everything else, details and specs could change.

What do you all think of the G2?
T-Mobile BOGO to Include Samsung Vibrant

Nothing is official as of yet, but starting September 8th and running through November 2nd, T-Mobile could be running their normal BOGO promotion, but this “Buy One Get One” will include the Samsung Vibrant. Along with other devices, the Vibrant is by far the best device with its 4″ Super AMOLED display and 1GHz Hummingbird processor that is currently available by T-Mobile. Again, this promotion is not yet official, but seeing this internal communication document above, we’re sure we’ll hear about it soon.

Would you by the Samsung Vibrant with this promotion?
All a twitter over #Android
Good afternoon guys and gals! The big news this weekend is of course everyone getting CyanogenMod 6 for their Android device. At last word, downloads have reached at least 35,000; thank you so much to everyone involved for making the ROM possible. If only getting updated was as smooth sailing for everyone. In other gossip, there is beta love and native app hate, smug owners and word feuds. Android is a widespread community, why not a meetup in Florida? How about it, Alex?
