Top 3 Operating Systems for E-Readers

During 2009, e-readers were operating at maximum efficiency with over 2.2 million devices being shipped to stores. In 2010, the demand for e-readers is expected to increase by more than 50%. Their operating systems create the necessary base for these popular devices. Many first-class eBook Readers run full operating systems and can function like a computer.Google AndroidIt is not surprising that Google Android tops the list of operating systems for e-readers. The Barnes and Noble 'Nook' was the first e-reader to use Google Android. Since that launch, Google Android has been used in various e-readers and that trend is expected to continue into the future. Google Android gives users access to 1,000,000 free, public-domain books digitized by Google. All devices using the Android system can tap into Android apps and vice versa. In addition, Google understands that the real power of the open source Android lies with the Operating System Defaults. Google eBooks will serve as the default on every Android device. The innovative eDGe e-reader, created by Entourage Systems, runs Google Android operating system. The eDGge is a netbook/e-reader combination which offers users the convenience of a Google toolbar on the right screen. Running on Wi-Fi and 3G networks, users can surf the internet, watch videos, or engage in video chat with this device.Spring Design's 'Alex' will also support Android apps. Yet any applications which require internet access will work only with Wi-Fi. With this dual-display e-reader, the 6.5" e-ink screen for reading sits above a 3.5” color LCD. Users can display images and video, view notes, and even browse the web.Expected to be released in 2010, the proposed Netronix, a collaboration between Texas Instruments and a Taiwanese networking specialist, is also an Android-based e-reader. Android e-readers allow portability of books (between Android e-readers) as well as access to Android apps.LinuxThe new Skiff reader is a Linux-based system. The Skiff reader is said to be the largest (11.5") and thinnest (0.25") with the highest-resolution (UXGA - 1200 x 1600). The Skiff reader is expected to be on sale later in the year. Interested buyers will be able to find it online and at over 1000 Sprint stores in the US.Sony Reader runs the MontaVista Linux Professional Edition operating system. Sony ebook Library is not supported on Linux. Yet when this device is connected, it grants access to its flash memory and memory card slots (as if they were USB Mass Storage Devices).Amazon's Kindle DX runs Linux-2.6.22.19. Operating system updates are received wirelessly and install automatically during a period in sleep mode in which the wireless is in operation. As it was noted in the article "Amazon Offer Kindle for Sale in Europe - Will they Succeed", the device is being offered globally on the 3G network with no charges for the wireless connectivity that is used to download eBooks (Digital Book Readers). With its Wacom touchscreen, Illiad runs Linux 2.4 kernel. Due to its open Linux operating system, Illiad can run third-party applications created for it. The Hanlin eReader v3, one of the first Open Source e-readers, is built on the Linux operating system. China's Hanvon uses Linux 2.6 and Cool-er, Pocketbook, and Bookeen also run Linux.WindowsAlthough Windows is slipping in popularity, it will remain a major player in operating system market for many years into the future. Sony PRS-505/SC Digital eBook Reader, with its company software Sony ebook Library, is similar to iTunes and requires Windows. The software will not work on the 64-bit version of Windows XP but does support Windows Vista and Windows 7. Recent announcements point to the use of Windows 7 in new color 'slate' e-readers such as Archos or HP. The Taiwanese company, MSI, has also created an e-reader/computer combo which runs Windows 7. E-readers with operational systems, such as the leading Google Android, encourage openness. These innovative devices are 'cracked' to allow users to run Android apps as well as download music and access social networks. Yet Fortify Software, the application vulnerability specialist, has issued a warning to corporations about possible security issues with modified e-readers. When a devise is 'cracked' or repurposed in this manner, there isn't any way to check the security of the operating system 'cracks' or newly installed programs. For usage outside the corporate world, however, e-readers have few drawbacks. E-reader companies are always trying to improve on features, performance, and design. E-readers have made a tremendous impact on the reading experience - what we read, where we read, and how we read books and newspapers. More and more people are choosing e-readers and their state-of-the art operating systems are helping to drive that demand.

Tethering Your T-Mobile G1

One of the things I like my most about my T-Mobile G1  is that I can tether the mobile phone to my laptop and use my mobile phone’s Internet connection to browse the web.  Tethering isn’t anything new, but most cell phone carriers simply won’t allow it.  They want you to go buy their expensive AIR cards and then pay an additional $50 - $75 per month for service.

Graham Stewart, from Boulder, Colorado created a very nice little Android app to tether the G1 to a laptop (or any computer for that matter).

Here are the instructions to get everything set up:

To get on the Internet, you’ll need to do a few things.

1. Open a cmd prompt (Press the windows icon and type cmd in the search bar). You need to navigate to the directory that contains the adb.exe file.  In my case, I just downloaded the ADB utility (see above) and not the entire Android SDK platform.  I unzipped the ADB utility into a folder called “Android” on my C: drive.  Now in the cmd prompt you’ll type cd C:Android

Now you need to type: adb forward tcp:1080 tcp:1080

If all goes well you should receive something that says “Daemon started successfully” (and then the window will appear to close).  The program is still running in the background so whenever you’re done using the Internet you should close it.  Press Ctrl+Shft+Esc to open the Task Manager.  Under the Processes tab, close the file called adb.exe to exit the program.

Tip: I created a simple shortcut on my desktop (right click on your desktop and select New Shortcut) to skip having to open the cmd prompt and enter the forwarding command each time.    If your adb.exe file is located in a different folder than mine below, just change the path to match yours. Here is what my shortcut looks like.

C:Androidadb.exe forward tcp:1080 tcp:1080

I also changed the icon of the shortcut to a cell phone because I’m cool like that.

2. Using Firefox is the best way to browse the web using this tethering app.  You can use Internet Explorer but I’m not making a tutorial for installing the proxy program with IE.  IE is scary.

Anyways, using Firefox, go to http://www.foxyproxy.com and download the plugin for Firefox.  Firefox should install it and then restart.  Once Firefox has restarted you should see something in the bottom right corner that says “FoxyProxy: Disabled.”  Right click on that and select Options.  Click on the Global Settings tab and then select “Use Socks Proxy for DNS Lookups”.  It will make you restart Firefox again… do so.

Now left click on the “FoxyProxy: Disabled” in the bottom right corner once.  Click on the tab that says Proxies.  On the right, click on Add New Proxy.  Make sure Enabled is checked and then give it a name. I named my connection “G1″ but you can name yours whatever you’d like.  Now click the tab at the top that says Proxy Details.  Select Manual Proxy Configuration and enter the host name (which is localhost) and the port (which is 1080).  Check the SOCKS proxy box and then choose Socks v5.  Click OK at the bottom of the window.

You’re so freakin’ close now!

Now that you have TetherBot installed on your phone, you’ve added the adb utility to your laptop and you’ve configured FoxyProxy in Firefox you should be able to give this thing a whirl.

These are the steps you’ll need to take each time you launch TetherBot

The port bouncer will let you connect to a single port on a remote host. This works well if you need to establish an SSH tunnel to your home machine.

This should work for TCP only vpns (openvpn can be configured in this mode) but it wont work for Microsoft PPTP (because it’s GRE based) or most typical openvpn setups (because they are UDP based).

and you should be routed through to the server in question.

The Cell2Get Google G1 Android Cell Phone Review

As with any mobile phone, it all depends on what you need. We have decided to review the Google G1 because we found that it was no ordinary mobile phone. The Google G1 mobile phone is one that you will enjoy no matter why you like a mobile phone.
The Google G1 offers a complete QWERTY keyboard. This makes text messaging, emailing, and surfing the web even easier than ever. Because mobile phones are made to be more compact so they can fit into pockets and bags finding a complete QWERTY that you can use is almost impossible. They all have their problems; keys are too small, keypad does not light up, or the letters and numbers are so small that you cannot read them clear enough. The Google G1 has this advantage.
There are other several benefits to owning the Google G1. You will have access to all the Google applications and they can be downloaded easily to your phone. This will help you personalize your mobile phone to make it work for you every time you use it. Imagine having access to Amazon MP3 Store for instant access to your favorite songs. The Google G1 will always be able to upgrade to meet the ever changing programs that are available. Do a quick Google search on anything using the one touch google option.
Enjoy features like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Now you can talk and connect with anyone, anywhere, and at any time. You can also find a 3G network on the Google G1 mobile phone which can get you on the web quicker. Now you can keep up with the latest auctions and know when you need to increase your bid to win.
Music is a part of everyone's day, including ours, and the Google G1 offers music to you in several ways. You can listen to the built in music player, watch videos, or you can watch YouTube videos from your phone.
What's great about the Google G1 is the camera. It features a 3.2 megapixel camera. Now 3.2 is not the best but for the more up to date phones that offer so many different gadgets and features you usually only find a 2.0 maximum camera. The 3.2 mp camera will allow you to take crystal clear pictures of what ever you choose no matter where you are.
The Google G1 comes in three colors; Black, Bronze, or White. Each color can be chosen to best suit your preference. Other ways to personalize your phone is to add different gadgets that can help you function quick and easy throughout your day. You can personalize your home screen using several different gadgets based on what you like and not what is already built in to your phone when you get it.
The Google G1 is great for sending and receiving emails, instant messaging, or text messaging as well. These functions are usually difficult when on a standard mobile phone. Stay in touch with the rest of the world no matter where you are at.
All in all, the Google G1 mobile phone is great for those on the go and those who have a desire to personalize every part of their mobile phone by adding or taking away different gadgets and programs. But customizing a mobile phone is the only way to really enjoy it completely.

This article was written by David Parish. In this article David covers the details of the Google G1. If you are interested in Unlocked Cell Phones, David recommends you visit Cell2Get.com because of they are a great Cell Phones resource.

Acer Liquid: the First Snapdragon Android

Acer has finally released an Android smart phone running on the Snapdragon processor. Sadly, for those who have been waiting for a chance to see the Google OS run on a 1 GHz processor, that event has yet to pass. The Acer Liquid does indeed have a Snapdragon CPU, but the speed has been lowered to 768MHz.

While this Qualcomm Snapdragon 8250 processor does a good job of running the Android (good luck getting it to slow down, many reviewers have tried but to no avail), it is more a matter of status than actual performance. It’s like driving on a busy street, no matter what car you have, the speed will not matter; but people will still prefer to be stuck in traffic in a Ferrari than a regular car.

Spinlet Feature

Acer is showcasing Spinlet in the Liquid. While the Spinlet has yet to see much use on desktop computers, it is one of the first full-multimedia widgets. While this app has yet to see much use on desktop computers, it will certainly do wonders for a mobile phone. This is the primary reason why Acer has chosen to have Spinlet on the Liquid, as its multimedia functionalities will certainly get the attention of many people –especially music fans.

Phone Specifications

The Acer Liquid sports a 3.5 inch TFT capacitive touch screen with a display capability of 256 thousand colors. The resolution is a nice 480 x 800 pixels and it uses the Acer UI version 3.0 in addition to the Android 1.6. The screen also has an accelerometer sensor and a proximity sensor (so putting the screen against your face will not accidentally turn on the speaker phone).

The 5 mega pixel camera provides the complete package. It has both auto focus and LED flash, making shots easy despite cluttered backgrounds, bad lighting or shaky hands.

This quad band 2G and 3G HSDPA device supports GPS, Bluetooth, micro USB 2.0 and micro SD cards of up to 32GB. Media storage will rely heavily on the SD card since the phone only has 256MB of RAM and 512MB of ROM for programs and other functions.

Available on Clove and eXpansys

For anyone interested in getting their hands on Acer’s top Android phone, the Liquid is already available online through internet retailers Clove and eXpansys. The two prices of the phone on the two companies are not too different with eXpansys offering the device at a slightly higher cost but with a little promotion for heavy shoppers with its special 20 Pound rebate coupon.

Clove has the Liquid on retail, sim-free and unlocked with a nice 328.90 price tag. eXpansys has more festive little promo; for 339.99 Pounds you get the device and (as said above) a nice 20 Pound store voucher. eXpansys is offering a wide variety of accessories that would be worth using the voucher on.

Both stores have the phone readily available for shipping; on the eXpansys website, the Liquid will ship upon receipt of payment and buyers can expect the phone to arrive within one to two working days. The average shipping cost within the UK is 6.16 Pounds.

Pay a visit to Best Mobile Contracts to look at all the latest phone deals. There you can find all the latest Acer Liquid deals on offer. There are also hundreds of detailed mobile reviews to read.

Frbiz.com reports Chinese software engineers assigned to the Internet in this transplant Android system

If you want to experience the magic of Google mobile operating system Android charm, but is reluctant to spend a few thousand dollars of money to buy expensive Android phones, and that the PC port version of Android may be a good choice.

You may recall that it was just released before the media, the success of the Internet in ASUS Android installed on this system for news, but for ordinary users, it was just an experimental product. To really installed, there are enormous difficulties and work.

However, the efforts of a number of Chinese software engineers, China's users have been able to enjoy this truly the Internet can be installed on the use of Android, and this is the Sun Yi, Huang Zhiwei, and Corentin Chary and several other developers who are participating in an active The Android-x86 open source project. In addition, there are other developers, such as Kelly2.Blue, Wu Hai Gang, Swand ke and Wallace1 wang, they are from mainland China and Taiwan, the Chinese software engineers.

Sun Yi sent in the latest version of update statement, made it clear that: they have solved many technical problems, including the Chinese Pinyin input method of the bug amendment, Bluetooth support, wireless LAN support, SSL revisions of the bug, or even already be installed directly into the Internet in this, from the hard disk. With these problems, China's PC users to use Android for work and study to become truly viable. The system is now available to download http://code.google.com/p/android-x86/downloads/list. 10 seconds or so start-up time and practical Internet access for many users, a trial should be a good reason.

According to reports, this project was originally a large number of Google's engineers work is carried out by Dima Zavin and then there are a lot of people have contributed some code, such as VMware and VirtualBox's support was provided by a man named Chen Yang (also a program in Beijing, China Clerk) completed. Sun Yi said, "on the basis of their work we have done a lot of improvement and modification before they can release now."

Sun Yi believes that the significance of this project is that, first, it could serve as a starting point to go for the PC's desktop environment to provide a complete solution for Android, and now the Android-x86 very suitable for UMPC or MID, but for a traditional desktop applications, Android have a lot of work to do. Second, it can provide developers with a fast low-cost development environment, I know, many people are using Andorid-x86 as their development tool. Thirdly, many people learn to use Android-x86 most Android tools.

It is understood that the open-source start of the project is fully internationalized. Sun Yi, said: "foreign to our attention, the project is still pretty good. From Google Analytics to see the foreign clients mainly from the United States, Italy, France and Britain. Generally speaking, our website visitors come from more than 120 different countries. our project web site traffic has continued to increase. "

Of course, for this open source project and they put a lot of time. Sun Yi said: "I basically every night of time spent on this project." Android engineers sometimes get some help.

In addition, when asked how they see the Chrome OS, the Sun Yi said, "I have not seen ChromeOS, does not it say so. According to Google's blog, open source ChromeOS will be announced later this month, to the time when we may there will be some comparison. "

Freedom Comes With Android OS

The only question you need to ask yourself when it comes to Google's Android operating system is whether or not you want to be free to access smartphone apps through any other provider than Apple. Apple's iPhone has been the go-to choice for consumers wishing to access smartphone app features. Since February of this past year however, Google has released its Android mobile operating system which can run on any mobile device and accessed through any service provider.
What is Android?
It is a mobile operating system running on Linux. Originally developed for Android Inc. it was purchased by Google and the Open Headset Alliance back in 2007. Google Android allows developers to write code in Java language, which allows the control of the device through Google's Java library. Basically allowing for open standards in mobile devices. Android allows for user reliability without artificial restrictions or limitations placed by application vendors. Now all hardware (smartphone) providers can offer applications much like Apple's iPhones. There is no longer a limitation to which phone can provide this application service.
The Android Market, a phone-based application store, has a catalog of applications which can be downloaded and installed without the use of a PC. Previously only freeware apps were supported, now they are all supported since these paid for apps became available in February of this year. The Android Market is expanding exponentially, and at this time there are over 10,000 applications for download.
Android VS. iPhone
Google's business model is more complex than Apple's, yet simpler. Unlike Apple, the company doesn't make money selling hardware and licensing the software. It a free, open source product. Google makes its money from selling ads, as well as tracking user preferences. Thus, Android is supported by third party hardware, and is limited to that third party's abilities. Problems can arise from this i.e. - hardware makers can add features that Google does not support and alternately Android can offer features which are not available in the hardware devices.
An alternative to the iPhone and iTune programs, Android phones are not integrated into
your central desktop. This is a big advantage to accessing applications and updates without having to constantly link to your CPU. There will unfortunately be a bit of configuring with Android because it allows for different mobile providers and buying from different hardware makers. Set-up, updates, backups and software management will be implemented differently on different Android-based products. Do some research of your provider and your hardware to ensure they are working in conjunction with Android. Some models can be unlocked and used anywhere while others are locked down and can disable hardware.
Break Free
Android is expected to arrive on most new devices from various hardware providers this coming year. It will be interesting to see what differences each company provides to customize their particular product. Android is hoping that a personally customized smartphone experience will undo the restrictions and market saturation of the iPhone experience. We all new this was coming, free the information, free yourself from corporate monopolies.

Newsbyte: Google’s Android Os Features Kill Switch

Just like the Apple with its iPhone, Google is looking to keep its Android phone programs under tight reins The news that Apple's iPhone had a kill switch built in that could destroy users apps that they had bought and paid for was at first met with incredulity.  When users discovered that the rumors were indeed true, they reacted with shock and anger.  Now Google has a similar situation brewing after it was revealed that its G1 phone which features its Android OS has a similar kill switch.

The tidbit was gleaned from the user contract terms of Google's Android Market, which it uses to sell software, similar to Apple's App Store.  The terms stated that Google can remotely kill your programs, describing, "Google may discover a product that violates the developer distribution agreement ... in such an instance, Google retains the right to remotely remove those applications from your device at its sole discretion." While the G1 phone from T-Mobile does not go on sale till October 22, many have been lent to reporters, so detailed information is becoming available.  While some may be angry at Google's decision, others are saying Google is treating the issue in more of a sensitive manner than Apple.  Google is acknowledging the kill switch for Android at the time of release.  Apple, critics point out, only acknowledged that a kill switch existed when a developer discovered it and loudly pronounced its existence to the internet community. Also Google says that it will try to refund users for any deleted Apps.  While this sounds common sense, iPhone users have yet to discover if they will get anything back if Apple deletes their Apps.  Google, on the other hand, says it will make "reasonable efforts to recover the purchase price of the product ... from the original developer on your behalf."  It will recover as much as it can from the developer and if it cannot offer a full refund it will redistribute whatever it collects to give a partial refund.

The programming languages you need to know about for successful ecommerce, online marketing, and search engine optimization

The programming languages you need to know about for successful ecommerce, online marketing, and search engine optimization

Everyone knows about the excellent content management systems and blogging platforms out there. These will help those who need to quickly put together a site. One needs to factor scaling, search engine optimization, etc. But there are those of bigger size projects who need something more on a professional basis. This is to put together a large-scale site that is usually meant for large companies to build an ecommerce site, social site, or enterprise level. Here is what I think are a complete synopsis but quick overview of what programming language you would want to go with. Let me now explain these in the order as explained at Tiobe.

http://www.tiobe.com/index.php/content/paperinfo/tpci/index.html

1. Java-what else can I say. This is very complex language that makes many vets drop the language and venture into other languages. There are many frameworks that include popular Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE), Hibernate, Struts, Spring, and so many more. There are so many reasons why this is popular. You have the likes of Weblogic, IBM, Oracle, Apple, Google, and many other large vendors who stand behind it. Also, this is a language which is scalable, mature, and proven to handle any traffic load. If your budget is not limited, you could always go with a great application server like Webspeheres (from IBM) or Weblogic or the free JBoss. There is always choice. These servers are rock solid for any project or site. That is why huge sites like Ebay, Amazon, and CNN are developed in Java. Also, Google’s back end services are developed in Java as well. If you ever decide to go with a mobile strategy, Google’s Android, Blackberry, and Nokia’s Symbian are all based on Java 2 Mobile Edition (J2ME) and their own software development kits. You can’t go wrong with Java. One more thing to add is that this language is compiled to the local operating system’s byte code which makes it ideal for speedy sites.2. C and C++-ahh the older languages, which brought object oriented programming to the mainstream. I am kind of excited by this language, as it is the closest language you will find to any Unix or Linux operating system, Just like Java, it is compiled to byte code to make it really fast. The main purposes of C/C++ is for those more complex backend systems used for purposes like multithreading or concurrency. You will find many local based servers written in this language. I always compare C/C++ like checkers, easy to understand but hard to master depending on the developer.3. PHP-outside of PERL, this language is great to develop raw websites with. It is also proven it can scale beautifully. Even Apache can easily include PHP flavors into any web server. It is quite advanced if you want to go there. You can also do some fancy stuff. The big disadvantages is you have to code your own navigation with rowsets from calls against databases. I am sure there are more advanced extensions to do this but PHP does show it’s age compared to newer web scripting languages.4. Visual Basic-Do I really need to talk about this one? First, it is Microsoft (MS). If you are a Microsoft shop, obviously .NET is the way to go so you should stick with the trilogy of ASP, Visual Basic, and C#. It is a very easy language to work with since it is forms based with your controls to do custom stuff. The Visual Studio is really decent to bang out .NET applications. It might be so great to develop custom or back end work so that is where C# comes in. My biggest gripe against Microsoft is the lock down, they force you to upgrade, and the costs involved for licensing. That would suck for those projects that are price sensitive. If you can, stick with open source and free languages outside of the Microsoft world.5. C# (C Sharp)-I really like this language. The syntax makes sense and yes, there are some unique ideas coming from Microsoft. This is especially true with your getting and setter properties of the language. All though it is not quite an original language, you can see the real rip off from Java and its predecessor to C or C++. Remember that Visual C++ was part of the older Visual Studio a few years ago.6. Pyhton-there is always this debate between Ruby and Python. Without Rails, Python easily wins over Ruby. Why? It is a closer scripting language that Unix based programmers prefer. From my understanding, it is mostly used for script testing or front-end development. Just ask Google or Yahoo as they use Python for their front-end home pages. That brings some clout for the language.7. Ruby on Rails-I have not seen a lot of demand for this language on the enterprise level but it is really coming around. It is so easy to put together a website using this language. Major search engines due to its URL structure love it. It is really quick to assemble a website as some consulting companies are switching to it. One needs to understand that Ruby is a separate language. As said, Python would be a better choice but once you implement with Rails the framework, could not ask for a better language. Many former developers of Java and C++ are jumping ship to this language. There are so many reasons that include the ability to quickly whip up a Struts like application. That is really appealing. The only gripe I have for RoR is it’s cryptic syntax. Unless you know RoR, you will not quickly pick up the source as with other more traditional languages.8. PERL-Do I really I need to review this language. It is a dinosaur web language. To be precise, it was the original so don’t choose this one unless you need to maintain something. There are some many better languages as explained above.

Hope that helps you out, but remember this is only my opinion. It might be a true reflection of your needs.
